Rainbow Center Coordinator (Program Specialist 1), UCP 6

The Rainbow Center at the University of Connecticut seeks a Rainbow Center Coordinator (UCP 6/Program Specialist 1). The Rainbow Center Coordinator will serve as a leader in the program development efforts in the Rainbow Center. Reporting to the Director of the Rainbow Center, this positon is charged with planning, organizing, and administering programs designed to provide awareness and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+), and allied community, social support for student constituents, and assistance in achieving their professional, educational, and personal goals.

The Rainbow Center serves the University of Connecticut’s diverse community of gender identities, gender expressions, and romantic and sexual orientations by fostering student personal growth, leadership development, community engagement; and providing resources, services, education, training, and advocacy. The Rainbow Center provides resources to enhance the University’s diversity commitment through its recruitment and retention efforts, teaching, service, and outreach to the LGBTQIA+ community on campus and beyond. Central to all its programming, the Rainbow Center provides a supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff that encourages academic excellence, personal development, community engagement, and professional leadership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides advocacy and support for LGBTQ students’ concerns; provide information, referral, and appropriate counsel to individuals seeking support

2. Collaborates with other cultural centers and University offices/departments to identify ways to develop new collaborative programs and initiatives

3. Responsible for the implementation, and evaluation of programs and support services for students

4. Supervises and evaluates the Graduate Assistant and the undergraduate student staff

5. Promotes the cultural center’s services and programs and works with the center staff responsible for specific marketing activity

6. Oversees all aspects of the student leadership team, including peer educators, student programmers, and group facilitators

7. Oversees the peer-to-peer mentoring program for first year and new transfer students

8. Coordinates programming for annual observances and Rainbow Center signature programs including but not limited to: National Coming Out Day/Coming Out Week, LGBTQ History Month, Celebrate Bisexuality Day, Transgender Visibility Week, International Transgender Day of Remembrance/Visibility, Asexual Awareness Week, World Aids Day, Ally Week, etc.

9. Advises the LGBTQIA+ student organization, the Queer Collective

10. Serves as instructor of record for UNIV 1820 LGBTQIA+ Identity, Representation, and Visibility

11. Represents the Rainbow Center at meetings with other University offices or external groups as needed

12. Assists the Director with Lavender Graduation and helps to facilitate the annual campus-wide awards process

13. Works with the Director to design and facilitate workshops, trainings, and other educational activities for the campus community

14. Assists the Director with the coordination of meetings and programs for the LGBTQIA+ Faculty and Staff Association

15. Be available to fulfill work responsibilities outside of established work hours and perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 2 to 4 years of related professional experience, which includes administrative and program planning within an LGBTQ or multicultural center in a university setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Proven ability to work effectively with the diverse LGBTQ community in a higher education setting

3. Proven ability of effective curriculum and training design and facilitation.

4. Comprehensive understanding of the LGBTQ student population and proven ability to apply theories of identity and student development to carry out the mission of the Rainbow Center

5. Proven ability to evaluate, problem-solve and troubleshoot to resolve difficult situations

6. Excellent written, verbal, supervisory, organizational, cross-cultural and interpersonal skills

7. Experience with group facilitation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Social Work, Gender and Sexuality Studies, or related field and 1 to 2 years of related professional experience

2. Teaching experience

3. Training in diversity education, social justice, cultural competence or other related fields

4. Knowledge of assessment/evaluation related to student learning and development

5. Experience with supervision and evaluation of student staff.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time 12-month position. Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
