February Celebrations

February is a time for love, celebrating Black history, and winter (for some). The Rainbow Center would like to highlight two upcoming dates: The AACC Black History Month Opening Ceremony showcasing Professor/Author/Activist Dr. Cornel West on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 7 pm @McHugh Hall RM 102 and; National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day which falls on February 7th. This day is delegated to increasing HIV education, testing, treatment, and involvement in African-American communities. 1 in every 5 people are estimated to be HIV positive in the United States (CDC 6.27.22). Testing has dropped amongst the population since the COVID Pandemic. With your privacy at the top of our concern, The Rainbow Center will be holding two discrete HIV Testing Clinics at the Center on February 8, 2023 from 9:30-1:15 and on February 27, 2023 from 3:30-7pm. Keep yourself and the community safe, get tested.

Happy PRIDE!

Happy PRIDE!

The Rainbow Center would like to wish UConn students, staff, and faculty a happy PRIDE month!  Our GA, Sarah Abbey, compiled a list of educational resources, videos, and podcasts all about Pride and LGBTQIA+ history for you to enjoy.  Sarah also included links to Pride events going on throughout the state of Connecticut.

Join us for a Faculty And Staff Pride Coffee Hour on Tuesday, June 7th, 2022 from 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM in the Rainbow Center lounge, SU 403.  Hope to see you there!

Message from the Director – New Hire

The Rainbow Center has some exciting news to share with the campus community!  In February 2019 the RC launched a search for its first full-time Rainbow Center Coordinator.  On-campus interviews for finalists were held in early May.  The search was remarkably competitive.  It is my pleasure to announce that Julia Anderson (she/her/hers) was offered the position and recently accepted.  She began her role as Rainbow Center Coordinator on June 21.  Julia brings a high level of expertise, facilitation, and dedication to the work and we are excited to have her as part of the Rainbow Center team.  Julia is a 2018 UConn HESA alum and previously served in a temporary programming role for the Rainbow Center for the past year.  Julia’s favorite part of her job is the personal connections she is able to make with students and colleagues at UConn. She will continue to oversee the FYE class taught in the Rainbow Center, the FAMILEE mentoring program, and the Rainbow Center’s training programs, among other things.

Thank you for a great year!

Message from Director

The Rainbow Center would like to acknowledge that last Friday night we displayed an Instagram post that was culturally appropriative.  The post has since been taken down.  We apologize and take responsibility for the harm we have caused.  In the future we will do better by re-examining our social media posting procedures.
