Overview

For many LGBTQ+ students, a college campus is a safe haven — a place they have longed to get to — where they can explore their identity, sometimes while still hiding it from their families. COVID-19 has presented so many challenges for students, and LGBTQ+ students are among the most vulnerable. Many have lost the only community they had. Being in limbo has exacerbated LGBTQ+ students’ mental health issues including depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, according to the Trevor Project.

Join this critical conversation with your peers on August 11, 2020 when our expert presenter will explore how you, as an ally to your LGBTQ+ students, can assist and support them as the fall semester begins, whether they remain away from campus or return to campus. You’ll review the data on the impact of COVID-19 on LGBTQ+ students, talk through case studies and gain valuable resources on supporting students with intersectional identities.

You’ll walk away with the tools you need to be sensitive and responsive to your LGBTQ+ students so you can help them engage, succeed and persist toward graduation.

Topics Covered

We will offer crucial, actionable takeaways that will help you:

  • Raise your awareness about the unique impacts of COVID-19 on students who are LGBTQ+ and who have intersectional LGBTQ+ identities — become an essential resource to help ensure that your LGBTQ+ students can persist during these difficult times.
  • View your mental health services and support systems through an intersectional lens so you can respond with sensitivity and understanding — be ready to support your LGBTQ+ students whether they remain away from campus or return to campus in the pursuit of their degree.
  • Develop a support system that proactively addresses LGBTQ+ students’ academic, social, financial and emotional needs during this uncertain time — mobilize your mental health resources and safe spaces in the best way you can to support your LGBTQ+ students so they remain engaged, satisfied and successful.
  • Learn how to assist your LGBTQ+ students with seeking support resources for managing distress — hold a trauma informed lens when interacting with your LGBTQ+ students to frame the impact of systemic oppression.
