As part of its commitment to ensuring the professional and academic success of transgender students, the Rainbow Center has created this guide. This guide is intended to assist transgender and gender non-conforming members of the campus community in navigating the policies and practices of the University before, during, and after a gender transition.

While gender transitions may share certain similarities, no two transitions are exactly alike. Each person’s transition process is unique to the individual and the specific steps and timing of a transition may vary, as well as how public the individual wants to be about the transition. As a result, please understand that no steps outlined on this website are required — they are optional resources.

To University Community Members:

While every person has the right to their own personal beliefs, all members of the University community are entitled to convey their gender identity and expression without harassment or discrimination. Working cooperatively and treating the diverse persons in our community with respect are core values of the University.

There is no “perfect” way to demonstrate your support for a person who is transitioning. Take the time to talk, remain open-minded and be prepared to listen. Resources and support are available on this webpage and at the Rainbow Center.

All employees and students remain subject to the University’s Policies prohibiting discrimination, harassment, and related interpersonal violence, as well as the Student Code and Employee Code of Conduct. Any concerns or complaints will be handled consistent with these campus policies and utilize the University’s existing investigatory procedures.
