True Colors Conference 23

March 18 & 19, 2016

The oldest and most well known program of True Colors, Inc. is the True Colors annual conference.  It began as a field work project for TC’s founder and current Executive Director, Robin MacHaelen in 1994 and is now the largest and most comprehensive LGBT youth issues conference in the nation. More than 3,000 youth, educators, social workers, clinicians, family members and clergy participate in more than 250 workshops, films, activities and events over the course of the 2-day event. School groups, presenters and attendees participate from more than half of the communities in CT, from across the Northeast
and nationally. This program represents 20% of our annual budget and is funded through conference registrations, co-sponsorships, ads and donations.

True Colors Conference Mission Statement:

To improve and enrich the lives of LGBTQA youth in school, at home, within the social service system and in the community by creating a forum through which LGBTQA youth and their allies may develop the skills and strategies necessary to:

  • Educate themselves and society their needs and concerns
  • Advocate for positive change at a variety of levels, from the personal to the political
  • Build leadership among adults responsible for the health and well-being of young people

True Colors Conference Goals:

  • To celebrate the diversity of LGBTQA youth and the community at large
  • To identify strategies for supportive intervention by the adults who care for youth
  • To enhance the leadership skills of youth, regardless of orientation, so that they may develop the tools and skills necessary to advocate and speak for themselves
  • To provide youth and those who care for them with a safe and nurturing environment for learning, networking and personal growth
